France: Rouen – Exploring the City

Rouen has a very well-preserved old town full of winding cobblestone streets, lined with half-timbered houses. The city dates back to Roman times and was known as Rotomogus in the 1st century. Its heyday famed in the 10-12th century during the rule of the Norman Dukes. It was a major port in the 16th century. There are lots of gothic churches, ornate mansions, and awesome cafes. Among the attractions are the massive Rouen Cathedral (previous post), Gros-Horloge 14th-century astronomical clock, extremely ornate Palaus du Justice, Place du Vieux-Marche square, and much more.
