France: Verdun – Douaumont Ossuary

Douaumont Ossuary is a memorial on one of the major battlefields of the WWI, when nearly 230,000 people died during the battle of Verdun in 1916, all on a field under 20 sq km. The memorial contains remains of around 130,000 soldiers from both sides – Germany and France. In the center of the memorial is a tower with a bell and sprawling around it are fields of white crosses.
