French Polynesia/Moorea: Driving Around Moorea
Moorea is roughly heart-shaped with two prominent deep bays indenting the shoreline in the north. The island is volcanic and mountainous – there are no roads through the middle as the sharp sawtoothed peaks make it impossible to go through. The 70km road hugs the shoreline closely with plenty of spectacular vistas along the way – the bays, beeches, lagoon views, mountains, villages, and churches. Several interesting churches in Moorea – including an octagonal one that is the oldest Christian church in the pacific as well as a double-tower one made completely from coral. Oh, and this is where Barack Obama spent a couple weeks post his presidency (not the church – but on a yacht in the Cook’s Bay).
