Gambier/Mangareva: Around Rikitea

Mangareva island is the largest in the Gambiers archipelago and home to the largest settlement of Rikitea. 60% of the entire island group population lives here (which is still only about 1200 people). The island has a central ridge towering above Rikitea below and a beautiful aquamarine lagoon surrounds the whole thing. The town is essentially one street with residential and administrative buildings and a spectacular cathedral that seems way oversized for it. There are also several historic colonial buildings.
