Georgia: Upper Svaneti – Mestia

Upper Svaneti is an isolated region high in the mountains of the Western Georgia and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It encompasses unsurpassed mountain scenery coupled with medieval villages and defensive stone towers. The area is so isolated that it was never conquered by any of the invading armies that roamed through the area. The towers are incredible and there are several villages with many of them, the best being Mestia and Ushguli. In Mestia, many towers have been restored and you can climb them. At night, Mestia plunges into darkness except for the medical watchtowers – a mesmerizing sight.
