Georgia: Vardzia to Apnia Road
Vardzia cave dwellings are located along a deep river valley and cling to near vertical cliff walls. On the other side of the river are equally high cliffs and there is a road rising up through a series of insane switchbacks. It’s only 9km or 5.6mi from Vardzia to the village of Apnia, but the road rises 512m or 1680ft of elevation gain. The road is just a dirt tracks full of boulders – a true adventure. All along the road, especially in the upper part, are spectacular alpine wildflowers and panoramic views toward the cliff dwellings of Vardzia
