Germany: Buchenwald Concentration Camp Memorial
Buchenwald (literally meaning Beech Forest) was built in 1937 and operated until 1945, one of the largest Nazi concentration camps. Around a quarter million prisoners worked on the German war machine here and a quarter died under the “death through labor” policy. Mostly Soviet POWs, but also thousands of Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, Jehovah witnesses, homosexuals, and others were here, bound for extermination. The camp’s motto – Jedem das Seine (To Each His Own) is engraved into the metal gate of the entrance, but in way to be read from inside, not outside. Most inmates died from starvation and hard labor, but many were shot, hung, or experimented on for chemical and biological warfare. The crematorium building is perhaps the most shocking. You walk around all this and you think how the f#%k could this happen in a modern developed country in the 20th century and millions of people fell through complete brainwashing to support all of this. And it all began with one insecure pathetic self-obsessed loser speaking to the masses about making Germany great again in 1933…
