Germany: Coburg – Veste Coburg aka Coburg Fortress
Situated on a high hill above the city of Coburg, Vista Coberg (also known as “Franconian Crown”) is one of the largest and well-preserved medieval fortresses in the whole of Germany. The construction began as far back as 11th century, but most of the structure is from the 16th century and extensive renovations and additions were done in the mid of 19th century. The fortress is truly impressive and looks totally impregnable – first of all it takes a winding uphill road to get to the top of the hill with panoramic views. Then there are super thick defensive walls that you can walk around. Next is the drawbridge and the gate into the inner castle with the palace and fortress grounds inside (mostly a museum). Finally, you climb the towers and walls for some superb panoramic views. A total gem!
