The most magnificent building is Hamburg is the Hamburger Rathaus aka City Hall. The massive and extremely elaborately decorated Neo-Renaissance building took 11 years to built and was completed in 1897, meant to highlight the extreme wealth and important of Hamburg City. The Rathaus has 647 rooms inside and a spectacular courtyard full of fountains and statues. The Rathaus to this day functions as the official government of the Hamburg city-state (one of the 16 German states).
