Germany: Muhlhausen – Divi Blasii Church
Divi Blasii Church in Muhlhausen is the oldest church in the town, built by the Teutonic Order in 1276. The church is talking with two towers, like a mini fortress, sitting in the heart of the main square, with pointed arches, ornate stone carvings, and tall spires. Its interior boasts intricate stained glass windows, towering columns, and vaulted ceilings. Johann Sebastian Bach worked as an organist here between 1707-08. The locals were so impressed with his performance that they bought a brand new organ for the church, specifically built to order to satisfy all Bach’s requirements. It was here that Bach composed the famous “God is the King” cantata, which the parishioners then paid to be printed – the only Bach’s work to survive in print.
