Ghana: Dixcove – Fort Metal Cross
Moving west along the Ghana coast and you get to the next beautifully preserved medieval fort – Fort Metal Cross in Dixcove. Originally built by the British in hope of finding gold nearby (which actually never materialized here), it was later retaken by the Dutch and fortified as the westernmost Dutch fort along the Gold Coast (present day Ghana). The fort is compact compared to the Elmina Castle, but occupies an imposing cliff position with far and beyond views along the coast in both directions. Guns pointing in all directions and walls rising high above the surf, the fort almost had no tourist visitors and you are likely to have it all to yourself.
