Greece/Corfu: Corfu – New Fortress
Venetians weren’t satisfied with the Old Fortress protecting the city from the sea side and thought to built another monstrous fortification. For this, over 2,000 homes were removed and the hill was assembled west of the town and then a New Fortress was built upon it around 1577. When the island passed to French and then British, they fortified and expanded it even further to protect against potential Ottoman Empire attacks. The New Fortress actually has two level – the first is pentagonal with a maze of different chambers and fortifications inside, and then another twin bastions on top. Absolutely stunning panoramas of Corfu open up from the highest level.
