Greece: Napflio- Palamidi Fortress
Palamidi Fortress is on the very southern tip of the Greek mainland and is a truly spectacular medieval fortification. It was originally built by Venetians in the 17th century on a high promontory overlooking open sea and far into inland. There are almost 1000 steps from the town on Napflio below to the fortress high grounds. Several bastions, long fortress walls, turret towers – this one has if all. And out in the sea on a small island there is a little twin baby fortress. Palamidi was captured by Ottomans from Venetians, and then Greeks fought for it back.
