Greece/Santorini: Islands of Nea & Palea Kameni
Santorini is a giant caldera consisting of five islands: Santorini, Thirasia, and Aspronisi form the remnants of the volcanic crater, while Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni are two brand new (well, relatively “brand new”) islands being built (about 15cm per year) right in the middle of the caldera. This is classic volcanic landscape – lava flows and cones, sulfur fumes, steaming earth – this is still quite active. There is also a hot springs area “puking” dirty brown sulfur/iron stew that one can swim in if you have disposable swimwear. Most people who come to Santorini probably never even come here.
