Greenland: Alluitsoq
Alluitsoq is a historic but now-abandoned settlement in southern Greenland near Cape Farewell, the island’s southernmost tip. It was established in 1733 by German Moravian missionaries as Lichtenau (meaning “light meadow”) and was once the largest permanent settlement in Greenland. The settlement is super picturesque with colorful houses and a large church. The church is the focal point of the settlement – it was central to the Moravian mission’s efforts to convert and educate the local Inuit population.
