Greenland: Crowberries

Crowberries are the main berries in the Arctic, often forming dense carpets over large expanses of tundra, with insanely high yield of black berries per square meter (highest of any other berry). The plant belong to heath family has been used by indigenous populations of Greenland and Canada and Alaska for centuries. Raw berries are mildly sweet but rather bland and slightly tannic and bitter, yet quite juicy. Every landing in tundra we found carpets of them – and of course we gorged on them everywhere. Crowberries are nutrient-dense “superfruits” with exceptional antioxidant level, more than double that of blueberries.
