Greenland: Segelsalskapet – Rock Prarmigans
Hiking at Segelsalskapet, We came across a family of classically arctic birds – rock ptarmigans – two adults and sixteen chicks! Rock ptarmigans are large non-migratory birds of the Arctic regions, changing their color from white in winter to grayish in summer to perfectly blend in with the environment (they were camouflaged against the rocks quite well). They also have “leg warmer” feathers on their legs Ptarmigans spend most of their time on the ground, conserving energy, and as such, camouflage is super important for them. They feed on grasses and seeds and roots. Ptarmigans (the size of small chicken) and hunted in Greenland.
