Greenland: Timmiarmiit Fjord – Humpback Whales

If the fjord filled with floating ice and icebergs wasn’t enough, there were dozens of humpback whales in the fjord, feeding and logging (swimming near surface), diving, and showing flukes. We hopped into zodiacs and approached the whales – it was a totally surreal experience: observing whales up close and personal for hours. Some dived and surfaced right next to zodiacs, many puffed really closed, and two did multiple breaching (jumping fully out of water) – which is really hard to capture. These massive mammals (up to 52 feet long and 40 tons) are drawn here by nutrient-rich waters of krill, capelin, and herring.
