Guadeloupe: Morne-a-l’Eau Cemetery
Cemetery of Morne-à-l’Eau is quite bizarre – a vast collection of checkered black and white crypts as far as the eye can see up and down a hillside. It is even known as the “Chessboard Cemetery.” The graves here date back to 18th century and run through the present day. The checkered tradition is not well traced or understands – the emanations range from “combination of sorrow and hope” to “ying and yang” to perhaps African traditions brought on with slaves. Whatever the reason, the cemetery is very unusual and very impressive, especially if you go and climb all the way to the top of the hill.
