Guatemala: Guatemala City – Cathedral & Parque Central
Guatemala City gets a bad rep for its crime and security situation, but the Central Parque square is a must see with the giant Guatemalan flag, National Palace of Culture (aka Presidential Palace), and the spectacular Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago de Guatemala. The massive building was constructed in Baroque style in 1815 (took over 90 years to build? and withstood multiple devastating earthquakes since then. The interior layout mirrors the form of the Latin cross with massive columns supporting the dome. There are also 14 painting by 17th century Mexican artist Pedro Ramirez, as well a dozen wooden Jesus sculptures.
