Guinea-Bissau: Orango Island – Inhoda Village
Deep in the middle of the Orango Island in the Bijagos archipelago lies the traditional Inhoda village. Like other villages in the island groups, Inhoda is isolated, remote, inhabited by the Bijagós people, who have a distinct and traditional way of life closely linked to their natural environment, relying on fishing, basic agriculture, and cashews. Tourism is very limited. The village has a matriarchal society with a queen at its head. Lots of traditional houses, kids running around, shucked coal and oyster shells everywhere. We even met the queen in her royal hut, who (seemingly inebriated) informed the tour organizer from our lodge that next time the payment for visiting the village is going higher and the amount of alcohol as a “present” should increase as well.
