Haiti: Port-au-Prince – Champ de Mars Square

Champ de Mars Square lies in the very heart of Port-au-Prince, the country’s capital. It is one of the largest public spaces in the city. The square is home to a couple monuments and statues dedicated to Haiti’s national heroes, commemorating key figures in the country’s fight for independence from French colonial rule. Jean-Jacques Dessalines monument honors the leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti, while the Alexandre Petion Statue celebrates one of Haiti’s founding fathers and its first president. The square is relatively safe these days as the gangs have been pushed out to different area of the city. That being said we did hear distant gun shots.
