Iceland: Asbyrgi Canyon – Goldeneye Ducks
At the end of the Asbyrgi Canyon lies a small but very beautiful and tranquil Botnstjörn lake. The lake is famous with birdwatcher for spotting rare bird species summering here, especially a wide variety of ducks. One of the duck species was especially striking and rare – Barrows Goldeneye duck – small but chubby-built with big bulbous heads and bright yellow eyes and dark-brown head. And they had small little black fury ducklings swimming all around. The Burrows Goldeneye ducks are diving ducks – feeding exclusively on mollusks and aquatic insect. They are quite rare in Europe, but often seen in Iceland. We could spend hours watching the ducks dive feet up and little ones trying to imitate.
