India: Ahmedabad – Bhadra Fort & Around
Moving on to Ahmedabad, the capital of Gujarat state. Gujarat in medieval times was an independent and thriving Islamic sultanate and a great fortified city core with a fortress and 14 towers and 7 gates encircled the old town. Most of it is gone by now and the Bhadra Fort itself is somewhat abandoned and empty. The architecture is distinctly different from the northern Mughal ornate forts, rather it resembles the round Omani forts in Arabia. You can climb to the roof for better views. Also, the large open areas in front of the fort known as Shah-Maidan are full of markets and great for people watching.
