India: Darasuram – Airavatesvara Temple
Airavatesvara Temple in Darasuram is the second of the UNESCO-listed Great Chola temples. This was dates back from 1146–1166 AD, built by Rajaraja II. The temple is surround by high wall and a moat. Inside is a 24m high vimana tower, smaller than the other two Chola temples but renowned for its intricate stone carvings. Seemingly everything and anything is carved into elaborate figures, mystical creatures and beasts, deities, semi-naked goddesses, and story panels – like a children’s book in stone – every niche holds a figure, every curve and column is an creature! The real gem is a standalone pillared hall – Rajagambhiran tirumandapam, built like a chariot pulled by elephants and horses.
