India: Delhi – Humayun’s Tomb
This UNESCO-listed complex is considered the inspiration for Agra’s Taj Mahal. The Humayun’s Tomb was built 60 years before the Taj for one of the most powerful Mughal emperors. The design is supposedly classic Persian (the emperor’s wife was from Persia), with the central tomb red and white building following strict geometric rules of Islamic architecture. The gardens around with the fountains and waterlines continue with the square geometry theme. A little outside the Humayun’s Tomb, there is also another very beautiful Isa Khan’s Tomb and a mosque.
