India: Delhi – Jama Masjid
Also outside the Red Fort is an absolutely beautiful old Mughal-era mosque – Jama Masjid or more fully Masjid-i Jahān-Numā – built by the Emperor Shah Jahan in 1644-56. The square inside the walls can accommodate 25,000 worshippers, making it one of the largest Mughal-era mosques. The mosque and the Red Fort were built to architecturally complement each other – same red sandstone and design elements. And the best part – you can climb the narrow spite of the minaret for an absolutely stunning panoramic view of Old Delhi near and far and the mosque right below you.
