India: Jaipur – Jaigarh Fort
Amber Fort in Amer is more of a palace then a fort and the Maharajas needed protection, so naturally – a massive and imposing fort was built on the ridge above it – Jaigarh Fort. This red sandstone fort is 3km long with super thick tall walls and turret towers controlling the ridge and overlooking the valley with Amer town below and the Amber Fort shimmering in the sun. This is first and foremost a military fort and to this day a large portion of it is off limits and housing barracks of the Indian Army. Jaigarh Fort is also famous for its foundry (given the ready supply of high quality ore) and the world’s largest cannon on wheels called Jaivabna was cast here in 1720 and now proudly stands on the highest platform in the fort.
