India: Jaipur – Jantar Mantar
Jantar Mantar is an outdoor observatory that includes 19 astronomical instruments built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. The world’s largest sundial is located here. The instruments are for measuring time, predicting solar and lunar eclipses, tracking star and planet locations as the earth orbits around the sun, and much more – amazingly accurate and advanced for the 18th century India. The sundial, for example, can predict time with accuracy of 2 seconds. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
