India: Jaipur – Nahargarh Fort aka Tiger Fort
Jaipur has a fort overload – Amber Fort with its palaces, Jaigarh Fort with its formidable fortifications, and last but least – Nahargarh Fort aka Tiger Fort. The Maharajas of Jaipur used this as a retreat and escape from the the city – the fort stands on the edge of Aracalli Hills high above the Jaipur city. The fort was built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawao Jai Singh, and then a scrumptious palace was built in 1883 by Maharaja Savai Ram Singh (and yes – I am just enjoying writing out the cool names). The latter built a whole floor of interconnected suites for his wives and concubines – a narrow corridor connecting all the rooms with the master bedroom suite but none of the rooms connected to each other. The rooftop of the palace offers some stunning views of Jaipur – the Pink City – with the entire city of 4 million people right below you. Oh, and there is another stepwell within the fort.
