India: Madurai – Madurai Wholesale Banana Market
Not to be missed in Madurai is the wholesale banana market – a truly vibrant and colorful experience. Bananas from all the surrounding areas are brought here and there are a total of 16 (yes, sixteen) banana varieties for sale here in three main colors – red, yellow, and green – and different state of ripeness. It’s totally awesome to roam under thatched roofs of the banana stalls and see all these mountains of bananas (and of course the sellers will let you sample all of it). Bananas retail for about 4000 rupees per 100kg, which is roughly $46 cents per 1 kg, or o $22 cent per pound.
