India: Mumbai – Gateway of India
The massive Gateway of India stands on the waterfront near the ferry port in Mumbai. It was built in 1911 for the landing of King George V of England in Mumbai of his visit to explore the British colony. It is often considered the most symbolic monument of Mumbai and a logical first step in exploring the megapolis. Tourists and locals alike flock to this 26m/85ft high triumphal arch to pose for selfies. Colorful boats congregate in front of the arch taking people across the bay to various islands and further to mainland. Next to the arch stands the majestic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, actually built in 1903 before the Gateway of India.
