Indonesia/Sumatra: Gunung Leuser NP – Exploring the Park
Exploring the Park Gunung Leuser National Park is one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet, stretching across roughly 800,000 hectares in northern Sumatra and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s the only place on the planet where Sumatran orangutans, tigers, elephants, and rhinos can be found in the wild (although quite rare). It’s a very steep up and down terrain, near vertical at times and trekking here is a total workout. We saw several primate species (orangutans deserve a separate post), some birds, and even a massive Asian Water Monitor lizard (these guys can grow to 2m long and look almost like Komodo dragons). The park is absolutely massive and day trekking penetrates only a small portion of the jungle .
