Indonesia/Sumatra: Gunung Leuser NP – Thomas’s Leaf Monkeys

This primate lives only in northern Sumatra and found nowhere else on earth – Thomas’s Leaf Monkey (Presbytis thomasi). The are quite large and known as “funky monkey” for their appearance – they have a dark grey body with a bright white belly and two distinct white stripes on their face that meet at the top of the head to form a stiff grey crest or mohawk. While their name suggests they only eat leaves, they are actually quite fond of fruit, seeds, and even the insects. While orangutans move slowly and deliberately, these monkeys are leapers and can clear massive gaps between trees with incredible precision, often using their long tails for balance mid-air. They are very inquisitive and often habituated to humans.
