Indonesia/Sumatra: Medan – Great Mosque of Medan
Not far from the Maimun Palace is the Great Mosque of Medan aka Masjid Raya Al-Mashun. It was designed at the same time as the Maimun Palace (late 19th century) and by the same Dutch architect. No expense was spared during construction; marble was imported from Italy and Germany, while the ornate chandeliers and stained glass were brought in from France – and it’s also a mishmash of styles – Moorish arches, Turkish-style domes, and Iranian-style minarets, and Moroccan tile work.
