Indonesia/Sumatra: Medan – Medan Old Town
The historic center of Medan served as the city’s commercial heart during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it remains a dense cluster of colonial Dutch, Chinese, and Malay heritage architecture. Lapangan Merdeka aka Independence Square is the very center of Medan and it’s surrounded by grand buildings like Old City Hall, Medan Post Office (everybody takes pics here), Bank of Indonesia and several others. Absolutely safe and easy to explore and there are some well known restaurants in here like the historic Tip Top Restaurant dating back to 1929, originally a Dutch bakery and an ice cream shop.
