Ireland: Athlone
The historic city of Athlone lies right smack in the center of Ireland and had an immense strategic importance thoughoit history – this is a critical gateway where the River Shannon divides the ancient provinces of Leinster and Connacht and control over this point meant control of the entire interior of Ireland. A fortress stands as a testament to this – Athlone Castle – the stone fortification has guarded this spot for over 800 years. In 1691, th fortress withstood a 12 day siege, while being pummeled by 12,000 cannonballs. Beyond the castle – the historic core of the city is really compact – beautiful river views and bridges, cathedral, a couple churches and many narrow streets with colorful buildings.
