Ireland: Cobh – Around Town

Cobh (actually pronounced Cove) was known as Queenstown from 1849 until 1920 and is a maritime town steeped in history. Between 1848 and 1950, over 2.5 million people emigrated from Ireland through Cobh, making it the single most important departure point in the country’s history – huge numbers of men, women, and children boarded ships here for a new life in North America and Australia. Cobh was the final port of call for the RMS Titanic on April 11, 1912 – the ship anchored out in the deep water of the harbor, and 123 passengers boarded via tenders from the White Star Line pier (the place has a memorial dedicated to it today). It’s a very picturesque town with colorful houses and pretty streets and a lot of maritime and Tit panic museums!
