Ireland: Killarney NP – Killarney Red Deer

Killarney National Park is home to Ireland’s only herd of Killarney red deer (Cervus elaphus). They represent the last surviving indigenous herd of red deer in the country, having maintained a continuous presence in these woodlands and mountains of since Neolithic times roughly 5,000 years ago at one point they went most completely extinct – less then 60 were remaining y 1960. Now there are around 900 animals. The red deer is Ireland’s largest mammal. We easily spotted a group of female deer in the park, near the eastern entrance.
