Ireland: Monasterboice

Monasterboice High Crosses and Monastic Site aka Mainistir Bhuithe is an ancient historic Christian settlement and a monastic site dating back to the 5th century, there are ruins of two fourteens century churches, a well preserved 10tg century stone round tower and three ancient high crosses – in fact, these are the best preserved high crosses in Ireland. Muiredach’s High Cross (The South Cross) is the most famous and considered the finest example of a Celtic High Cross in existence. It is carved from a single block of sandstone and has very elaborate carvings depicting biblical scenes in great details. The West Cross is more weathered but is taller an is the tallest high cross in Ireland. Finally, there is also the North Cross , less elaborate but also dating to the same time in the 10th century
