Ireland: Skerries

Skerries is a picturesque fishing town with a beautiful harbor and multiple beaches along a rocky shore. Skerries harbor is the heart of life in town – along a beautiful crescent of land with boats in the water and bar and restaurants on land. A little further is a rocky coastline and a historic Skerries Martello Tower – a coastal fortification standing prominently on Red Island, a headland that juts into the Irish Sea. It was built by the British in 1805, this sturdy to spot and repel a potential invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte (there are many towers like this along the coast). Interestingly, because of its unique geographic orientation on an east-coast peninsula that hooks backward, Skerries harbor is one of the rare places on Ireland’s east coast where you can watch the sun set directly over the water.
