Israel: Jerusalem – Western Wall
Western Wall is one of the walls of the rectangular wall structure supporting Temple Mount. Over 2 thousand years ago, the Temple Mount held sacred Jewish Temple build by King Herod, that was later destroyed. However the Western Wall retains most of the stones and structure from those days and hence is the closest to the original temple, this being the most sacred place (outside of actual Temple Mount) in Judaism. Part of the wall is exposed (divided into male and female sections), and part goes below the buildings. Jews come here to pray, standing against the wall (hence the term “wailing wall”). It’s busy during the day but on the night of prayer it is swarmed with thousands of people, all dressed in black.
