Italy: Cerveteri – Etruscan Necropolis of Banditaccia

The Etruscan Necropolis of Banditaccia in Cerveteri is one of the most significant archaeological sites of the ancient Etruscan civilization. Known as the “city of the dead” spans roughly 400 hectares, with only around 10 hectares open to the public, containing approximately 1,000 tombs dating from the 9th century BC to the 3rd century BC. The Banditaccia Necropolis has city-like layout with streets, squares, and neighborhoods carved into volcanic tufa rock. There are many different tombs, from simple hole in the walls or ground to massive and elaborate structure with multilevel burials and staircases. You totally feel like Lara Croft the tomb raider! It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
