Italy: Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a bell tower and part of the Piazza dei Miracoli cathedral complex in the town of Pisa in Tuscany, Italy. The tower is world-famous as a symbol of Italy. The construction started in the 1100s and the tower started sinking a few years later with only two stories built – the soil was unstable and the foundation was weak. Despite this, the construction continued for years and the architects used various architectural tricks to keep it going up (it actually is curved). The tower is 56 meters high and it take 296 step to get to the top. Explore the rest of the Piazza as well – the Duomo (cathedral), the Baptistry and the Camposanto. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
