Italy: Siena – Siena Cathedral

Siena’s cathedral (Duomo di Siena) is absolutely stunning in and out and nothing like you’ve seen before – an absolute masterpiece of Romanesque-Gothic architecture and art. It’s borderline surreal and otherworldly with all the black and white marble and lavish decorations. The cathedral was built between 1215 and 1263 and features a Latin cross layout with a hexagonal dome, a bell tower,. The exterior and interior are adorned with alternating black, white, and greenish-black marble, with red marble accents on the facade. It’s absolutely beautiful, but you get even more blown away once you step inside – the alternating bands of dark and light marble continue inside. The floor is the cathedral’s most iconic feature, comprising 56 inlaid marble panels The ceiling features ornate vaulting, with some sections showcasing blue frescoes and gold detailing. Everything inside is absolutely over the top – including the carved marble of the Pisano Pulpit and the brightly colored frescoes and priceless paintings of the Piccolómini Library. You neck will hurt from staring upwards in total awe! It’s a UNESCO Workd Heritage Site.
