Italy: Siena – Siena Cathedral’s Baptistery, Crypt, Museum
Besides the main cathedral building and its interior, the Siena Cathedral has more to offer – its baptistery, the crypt, and the museum. The crypt has several rooms that were discovered only in 1999 during renovations that are full of really old 13th century frescoes. The baptistery, built in the 14th century, and is nearby and it’s a stunning structure, completely covered with frescoes form 1407–30, depicting scenes from the life of Christ. In the center of the baptistery is a massive hexagonal marble font, very richly decorated. Finally the museum is adjacent to the cathedral in an unfinished nave and has a lot of original statues and altar pieces, while the replicas have taken their place.
