Italy: Aosta Valley – Fenis Castle
Aosta is the region of northwester Italy right below the Alps. It’s dotted with spectacular medieval castle, often in improbable locations and fairy-tale appearance. Fenis is one of the best – a pentagonal structure with two layers of walls and multiple defensive towers. It was built between 1320 and 1420. Besides being impressive from the outside, the inside is decorated by frescos throughout.
