Ivory Coast: Abidjan – St. Paul’s Cathedral
St. Paul’s Cathedral in Abidjan is one of the largest and architecturally unique churches in the world. Finished in 1985 at a cost of $13 million and blessed by John Paul II himself, this cathedral resembles an alien space ship more than a religious building. There is no cupola or dome and no cross, instead it has a triangular hall building sitting 5,000 people and in front there is a cross-like structure meant both as a cross and the statue of Jesus with outstretched arms. It looks like this thing is pulling the rest of the building into the lagoon. Inside the building – colorful windows and even more colorful women’s dresses.
