Ivory Coast: Cocoa Plantations
Ivory Coast feels and is in actuality much richer than its other West African neighbors thanks to mostly one thing – cocoa! Ivory Coast is the world’s leader in cocoa production, responsible for nearly 40% of the world’s supply. Cocoa is responsible for 40% of the country’s GDP. While the cocoa tree – Theobroma Cacao – take origin in the Amazon Basin in the South America – it took well to the tropical and humid equatorial climate off Ivory Coast. Most of cocoa production in the country is done in small patchy farms. Cocoa has been associated with several wrongs in the Ivory Coast’s history – from paying for the extravagant projects of its former dictatorship to using child labor it its production.
