Ivory Coast: Korhogo – Weavers, Batik Artists, Woodcarvers
Senufu people are renowned for their mastery in various crafts such as weaving, batik printing, and wood carving. As we explored the city, we got to see the artisans at work – and it was totally amazing. First we saw weavers – manually making cotton cloth with looms old-fashioned tools – the traditional patterns mostly inspired by more and ancestral symbolism. Next were the batik printers – using the cloth and painting a variety of patterns and animal prints in them material. Interestingly, in the past they used special knives instead of brushes and it was Picasso himself who visited these shops and taught them how to use toothbrushes as tools for painting! Finally, we went to see the woodcarvers who make stunning Senufu traditional masks and figures of various shapes and sizes.
